Managing students’ insufficient answers in oral examinations

What happens when students cannot answer teachers’ questions in oral examinations? This study investigates how teachers manage students’ insufficient answers disciplinary competence exams (DOCEs) the secondary school context. Using conversation analysis, we show that either pursue an by reformulating it and providing more topic information or abandon original question move on to a new sequence creating contiguity defusing negative implications. Pursuing provides additional opportunities but does not necessarily enable provide quality answers. Abandoning means lose chance display knowledge, opportunity another question. The contributes understanding of managing trouble displays non-standardized test talk specifies interactional practices used responses. It also reveals dilemmas must solve real-time examinations.
